What should I do in an orthodontic emergency?

In an orthodontic emergency, the most important thing is to stay calm—most situations are not true emergencies and can often be managed at home until you can see your orthodontist. Common issues include a poking wire, a loose bracket, or a broken retainer. If a wire is irritating your cheek or gums, you can place orthodontic wax, a small piece of cotton, or even sugar-free gum over it to protect your mouth. If a bracket or band comes loose, leave it in place if possible and cover it with wax for comfort; avoid trying to fix it yourself. For soreness or irritation, over-the-counter pain relievers and warm saltwater rinses can help. If you lose an aligner or retainer, call your orthodontist promptly—they’ll let you know whether to move to the next set or wait for a replacement.

A true emergency is rare, but you should seek immediate care if you experience severe pain, significant trauma to your face or teeth, or swelling that suggests infection. In those cases, contact your orthodontist right away, or if it’s after hours and urgent, visit an emergency dentist or the emergency room. In most other situations, a quick call to your orthodontist’s office will provide guidance and usually a same-week appointment to fix the problem.
