Orthodontic treatment is generally very safe, but like any medical or dental procedure, it can come with some risks and side effects. The most common is soreness or discomfort, especially after braces are tightened or new aligners are used, though this usually improves within a few days. Brackets and wires can sometimes irritate the cheeks, lips, or tongue, but orthodontic wax often helps relieve this. If teeth aren’t kept clean, plaque may build up around appliances, leading to cavities, gum inflammation, or white spots on the teeth. In rare cases, the roots of teeth may shorten slightly during movement, or gum tissue may recede if teeth are shifted too far. Some patients experience minor jaw or bite issues, such as temporomandibular joint (TMJ) discomfort, while others may notice that teeth naturally want to shift back after treatment if retainers aren’t worn as directed. Rare allergic reactions to metals, latex, or plastics used in appliances are also possible. Finally, treatment can sometimes take longer if instructions, like wearing elastics or aligners, aren’t followed closely. Fortunately, most of these risks are temporary, preventable, or easily managed with good oral hygiene, regular checkups, and cooperation with your orthodontist’s guidance.
