The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children have their first orthodontic evaluation by age 7. At this age, a mix of baby and permanent teeth allows the orthodontist to detect subtle problems with jaw growth and emerging teeth, even if they appear to have straight teeth.

Early evaluation doesn’t always mean early treatment. In many cases, we simply monitor growth and development until the optimal time for treatment. However, in some cases, early intervention can prevent more serious problems later on.
